More visitors in the city centers

Last year there were more people in the shopping streets in Germany than in 2023. The increase is particularly strong in three places.

According to an analysis, there was a little more going on in German city centers in 2024 than in the previous year. According to an analysis by the data portal Hystreet, pedestrian frequencies were around 1.5 percent higher nationwide. An increase of 4 percent was recorded during Advent.

Looking at the whole year, according to Hystreet, the most passers-by were counted on two shopping streets in Munich: Kaufinger Straße had 30.5 million, Neuhauser Straße 29 million. In third and fourth place were Zeil in Frankfurt (23.7) and Georgstrasse in Hanover (23.3). The strongest increases compared to the previous year were on Kaufinger Straße (+5.8 percent), the main street in Heidelberg (+5.7) and on Jungfernstieg in Hamburg (+5.5).

As a result of the European Football Championship in Germany, the portal noticed significantly higher visitor numbers than usual in some cities in the summer. There was particularly a lot going on at the venues.

HDE: Retailers not satisfied with Christmas business

Hystreet counts pedestrian frequencies fully automatically around the clock in around 110 cities at 322 locations using laser scanners all year round. According to the company, the measurement accuracy is 99 percent.

Although there was more activity in the city centers last year, many retailers were still not satisfied with their business. The German Trade Association (HDE) revised its forecast for 2024 downwards in November. In real terms, i.e. adjusted for inflation, sales are expected to be at the previous year’s level. Final figures are not yet available. According to HDE, Christmas business also did not go as well as hoped.
