Butter gets cheaper again

Consumers had to dig deep into their pockets for butter at discounters and supermarkets. The prices skyrocketed. Now there is a trend reversal.

Butter becomes cheaper for consumers in Germany. The Lidl and Kaufland retail chains have reduced the price for a 250-gram pack of German branded butter of the own brands to EUR 2.25. That is about 6 percent less than last. The discounters Aldi Nord and South then followed up. From Friday, they reduce the price by almost 8.5 percent to 2.19 euros. Other butter products should also be cheaper.

Other chains such as Rewe, Penny and Norma also announced price cuts in their own brands. This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency. Edeka and Netto initially left an inquiry unanswered. If individual food dealers permanently reduce corner price items such as butter, others usually follow up quickly.

In October, the price for the cheapest packet of German brand butter rose to 2.39 euros. Butter cost more than ever. According to experts, the reasons were smaller amounts of milk that are supplied by the farmers, and a lower fat content in raw milk. In summer, the blue tongue disease led to the break -in of milk yield in affected animals.

Large price fluctuations in butter

Despite the strong price increase, no less butter was consumed in Germany. In the 4th quarter of 2024, the amount purchased per budget was only 1.3 percent lower than in the same period of the previous year, as data from the market and opinion researcher YouGov show.

There have been large price fluctuations in butter in recent years. In the summer of 2023, customers had to pay EUR 1.39 in most shops for a parcel of their own brand butter in most shops. The shelf prices for comparable products from brand manufacturers are always higher.
