More and more vehicles are traveling on German roads. Last year the numbers of two specific drive types rose significantly.
The number of vehicles on German roads has increased again. As of the deadline on January 1, a total of 61.1 million motor vehicles (vehicle) were registered-an increase of 0.7 percent compared to the previous year, as the Federal Motor Transport Authority announced. The number of vehicle supporters also increased by 1.4 percent to 8.56 million.
Diesel and petrol engine on the retreat
Cars continued to form the largest group with 49.3 million vehicles. 88.3 percent of them were approved privately, while commercially used cars were slightly back to 5.7 million (-0.1 percent). In classic combustion engines, the numbers show a decline: the diesel content shrank by 2.2 percent to 28 percent and petrol engines recorded a minus of 1.0 percent, which means that they are now still 60.6 percent of the inventory.
Alternative drives, on the other hand, increased significantly. Hybrids increase by 22.2 percent to around 3.56 million vehicles. Pure electric cars also recorded an increase from 17.2 percent to 1.65 million vehicles. Plug-in hybrid also increased, albeit a little more moderate by 4.9 percent to more than 967,000 vehicles.
The most common brand registered in Germany was again Volkswagen with a market share of 20.9 percent. This was followed by Mercedes (9.6 percent), Opel (7.9 percent) and BMW (7.0 percent). Skoda vehicles were most frequently imported with a share of 5.6 percent, followed by Renault and Seat with a 3.3 percent share.
