Wind, sun, water: Renewable energies are Germany’s most important sources in electricity generation. The proportion even grew last year.

Record for green electricity production in Germany: 59.4 percent of the electricity that was generated in this country last year and fed into the network came from renewable energy sources such as wind power, photovoltaics, biogas and hydropower.

In 2024, more electricity from renewables than from conventional energy sources such as coal and natural gas were fed in almost every month, the Federal Statistical Office said. Over the year, the amount of green electricity increased by 2.3 percent in the previous year to 256.4 billion kilowatt hours.

Wind power most important – solar boomt

The most important energy source as already a year earlier: wind power with a slightly increased proportion of 31.5 (2023: 30.8) percent – even though the amount of electricity generated from wind power within a year was decreased by 1.4 percent to 136 billion kilowatt hours. In 2023, Windkraft coal had replaced the most important energy source in Germany.

The Wiesbaden statisticians recorded a clear plus in the electricity feed -in from photovoltaics: Here it was 10.4 percent to 59.5 billion kilowatt hours. Solar energy thus contributed 13.8 percent to total electricity production in Germany – a record value since the start of the survey in 2018.

Cabbage stream continues to lose importance

Meanwhile, the importance of coal for domestic generation of electricity continued: with 97.2 billion kilowatt hours, 16 percent less coal current was fed into the network than a year earlier. The proportion of coal in the entire domestic electricity production fell to a low of 22.5 percent. In 2023 it was still 25.9 percent.

A total of 431.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated in Germany in 2024 and fed into the network. According to 3.6 percent less than a year earlier. The reasons for the decline are in particular a lower electricity requirement due to the decline in production in industry and the increased import of electricity from abroad.
