Awards: US actress Viola Davis achieves “EGOT” status

Few artists manage to win the entertainment industry’s top four trophies. With her Grammy, Viola Davis joins the ranks of the big Hollywood stars.

Hollywood star Viola Davis has been honored with a Grammy for the audio book of her autobiography “Finding Me” and has thus achieved the so-called “EGOT” status. The reported US media unanimously. “EGOT” honorees are artists who have won all four major US entertainment trophies: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

The 57-year-old beat Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jamie Foxx, Questlove and Mel Brooks in the Best Spoken Album category. In her acceptance speech at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles, she said: “I wrote this book in honor of six-year-old Viola. In honor of her life, her joy, her trauma.”

Davis received Tony awards in 2001 and 2010 for her roles in the Broadway plays King Hedley II and Fences. In 2015 she received an Emmy for her leading role in the crime series How to Get Away with Murder. In 2017, she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film adaptation of Fences.

Artists who have received all four awards include Audrey Hepburn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson. The latter turned to her new castmate on Twitter: “Congratulations to a living legend. Time to celebrate!”
