Last year, after two years of Corona, the federal museums finally recorded an increase in visitors. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of catching up to do in the times before the pandemic. With a total of 5.4 million visitors, the total number of 2021 was more than doubled, compared to the pre-Corona all-time high of 2019 (6.9 million), there is still a gap of 21.5 percent. For comparison: In 2017, the hotels had 5.6 million guests. The different growth in the individual houses is also striking:

The Belvedere gained 278 percent from 2021 to 2022, with the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) bringing up the rear with an increase of 34 percent. At the top in absolute numbers is the KHM association with the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which recorded more than 1.3 million visitors in 2022, which corresponds to an increase of 143 percent compared to 2021 (553,761 visits). It is followed by the Belvedere with more than 1.2 million (2021: 328,418 visits), followed by the Albertina and the Albertina modern, which opened in May 2020, with 965,000 visitors, which corresponds to an increase of 109 percent compared to 2021 (461,800).

The comparison with 2019 is of particular importance. Here, the Technical Museum grew by 1.7 percent and recorded a record year in 2022, while the National Library recorded a minus of 60 percent. Overall, the federal museums are down 21.5 percent compared to 2019.

Basically, according to the office of Secretary of State for Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens), the figures for 2022 should still be read in the context of the pandemic. After all, the last corona measures in museums were only lifted in April 2022. International tourism, which is still sluggish, has led to 1.988 million visitors from Austria being recorded. The increased number of visitors can also be attributed to a catch-up effect – especially in the case of visits by school classes. While only 391,025 visitors under the age of 19 came to the federal museums in 2021, in 2022 it was again 1,129,752.

Mayer is pleased with the increase in demand for the Federal Museum Card, of which a total of 7,404 were sold (2021: 3,593; 2019: 2,792).
