Mourning for Charles Kimbrough: The US series star died at the age of 86. He is best known for the CBS series “Murphy Brown”.

The US actor Charles Kimbrough (1936-2023), who became known in particular for the series “Murphy Brown”, is dead. According to consistent media reports, Kimbrough died of natural causes on January 11 of this year at the age of 86. His son confirmed this.

Major supporting role in “Murphy Brown”

TV viewers will remember Kimbrough as the overly accurate news anchor Jim Dial in the US-popular CBS series “Murphy Brown” (1988-1998). Kimbrough embodied the character for all ten seasons and in three episodes of the series revival in 2018. He was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1990.

The series “Murphy Brown” took place behind the scenes of a fictional news program. Candice Bergen (76) played the title character, a former alcoholic who finds her way in the male-dominated world of TV journalism.

Theater engagements and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

In addition to his involvement with “Murphy Brown”, Kimbrough has been active in the theater over the years. He appeared in Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed Broadway play Company, for which he received a Tony Award nomination in 1971. In 1995 Kimbrough was on stage alongside the later “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker (57) in the comedy “Sylvia” in New York.

Kimbrough voiced the gargoyle Victor in the original English version of the Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Kimbrough was also heard as Victor in the sequel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2”.
