Guillermo del Toro after winning the Oscar for his version of Pinocchio: “Animation is cinema”

It is the third Oscar win for the Mexican writer-director and his first win in the animated feature category.

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars 2023surpassing turning red, The Sea Beast, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

This marks the third Oscar win for the writer-director. Guillermo del Toro and his first win in the animated feature category, as well as his first nomination and win for director. Mark Gustafson and the producers alex bulkley and Gary Ungar. Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro also marks the first victory of Netflix in the Oscar category for Best Animated Film.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio delivers a visually stunning stop-motion adaptation of the fable of Pinocchio, reimagining the story in 1930s Italy during the Fascist reign of benito mussolini.

After the loss of his son Carlo to an aerial bomb, the woodcarver Geppetto (David Bradley) carves a wooden boy from the tree on Carlo’s grave, which has recently become home to a cricket named Sebastian (Ewan McGregor). A mysterious forest sprite (tilda swinton) gives life to the puppet, names him Pinocchio (gregory mann) and promises to grant Sebastian a wish if he acts as the boy’s conscience.
