John Travolta fights back tears at the Oscars

John Travolta fought back tears at the Oscars as he announced the tribute to those who had died last year. He was particularly affected by the death of his good friend Olivia Newton-John.

It’s a good tradition at the Oscars: When Hollywood stars meet to honor the best films and actors of the past year, the dead are also remembered. Every year, the actors and filmmakers who have died since the last gala are remembered. This regularly creates emotional moments – including at this year’s award ceremony.

John Travolta was given the task of hosting this part of the Oscars gala. And that was visibly close to the actor. Again and again he had to fight back tears, his voice faltered. “All of them left a lasting impression, they touched our hearts, they made us smile and became dear friends that we will forever remain hopelessly loyal,” Travolta said.

John Travolta says goodbye to Olivia Newton-John

The 69-year-old used the English expression for this “hopelessly devoted”. That’s the title of a song from the movie “Grease” (1978), in which John Travolta co-starred with Olivia Newton-John. Both of them achieved their breakthrough, Newton-John was at the top of the charts with the piece for a long time. In August 2022 she died at the age of 73 as a result of breast cancer.

Since their joint film success, Travolta and Newton-John have had a close friendship that lasted for decades. It was correspondingly moving for the actor to be able to pay his last respects to his girlfriend on the Oscars stage. After her death, Travolta said goodbye to her on Instagram with touching words: “”My dearest Olivia, you have made all our lives so much better. Your work was indescribable. I love you so much. We will meet again someday and be together again. I was yours from the moment I saw you and will always be.”
