Former US President Donald Trump has been convicted of sexual abuse and defamation. He has to pay millions in damages.
Former US President Donald Trump (76) was convicted of sexual abuse and defamation in a civil trial on Tuesday (May 9) in New York. The US author and journalist E. Jean Carroll (79) was awarded a total of around five million US dollars. . The court saw her rape allegations against Trump as unproven.
The former president called the jury’s verdict a “total disgrace” in a post on his platform Truth Social, according to CNN, saying it was a “continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time.” He further claims that he does not know who E. Jean Carroll is.
Incident in a posh department store
According to US media reports, journalist E. Jean Carroll confirmed her allegations of rape against the former US President in a federal court in New York at the end of April. In her testimony at the civil trial, Carroll said, “Donald Trump raped me. That’s why I’m here.” It is about an alleged incident in the 1990s in a luxury department store.
When asked by the court why she only went public more than 20 years after the alleged crime, Carroll replied: “I was afraid of Donald Trump. I was ashamed. I thought it was my fault.” Now she is in court to get her life back.
The allegations have been around since 2019. Trump repeatedly denied the allegations with great vehemence. Carroll is a liar. Among other things, he said that the “Elle” columnist and former TV presenter was not his type and that it was also absurd that he wanted to rape a nearly 60-year-old woman. The crime is already statute-barred under criminal law in the USA, which is why the case was only heard in a civil court. Trump did not appear in court in person.
