Speaking to In Depth with Graham Bensinger, the Swedish actor shared that his first brush with cancer came in 2015, when a cancerous tumor was discovered on his kidney. He had the tumor removed, and scans came back clean for the next five years until more tumors were discovered in 2020.

In 2020 Lundgren revealed that six tumors were removed during his operation. “If he dies, he dies,” said the actor, referring to Ivan Drago’s iconic phrase in rocky IV.

The following year, Lundgren was told that a tumor had been discovered in his liver, although it was too large to remove and that doctors said he had “two or three years” left. He was also told that he had more tumors in his lungs, stomach, spine, and kidneys.
“I thought that was it. You look at your life and say ‘Oh, I’ve had a great life.’ Yeah, I’ve had a damn great life, I’ve lived like five lives in one. It wasn’t like I was bitter about it, but I felt sorry for my children, my fiancée, and the people around me,” he said.
After seeking a second opinion, Lundgren was able to undergo additional treatment that resulted in the tumors shrinking by 20 to 30 percent “in three months.” Since then, the tumor on her liver has shrunk by 90 percent, and Lundgren and her medical team are working to remove any remaining scar tissue.
Lundgren has since confirmed that although he is not in remission, he will be kept on medication “as long as possible.” to keep tumors at bay.
