Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner: The dirty side behind the breakup

While some fans were still sad about the separation of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, the PR machines are already running at full speed in the background. At least that’s what experts think.

When a celebrity couple separates, there is much more to it than just the end of a great love. Because the image is also at stake – an important, if not the most important, currency for stars.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner: amicable separation – or not?

This is also the case with Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The Jonas Brothers singer in particular has many (female) fans. Last Friday, the first reports began circulating that Jonas and Turner had separated. On Monday, the singer posted a photo of himself with a wedding ring – without comment. On Tuesday he finally filed for divorce and the two released statements. They said they had separated “amicably”. Many of his fans were completely confused.

What followed should be a familiar strategy for PR experts. In various press reports, sources claimed that Jonas didn’t like that Turner was drinking and partying so much. They said he had been looking after the children for weeks. Paparazzo pictures were released showing the musician with the couple’s two daughters. The not-so-subtle subtext behind it: Joe Jonas is a self-sacrificing father who takes care of the children while the mother celebrates.

There is no evidence that the reports are actually spread by Jonas’ PR team. But it is known that celebrity representatives occasionally work with the press, especially in divorce cases. However, in this case, it seems as if a large proportion of media consumers understand what is currently happening. Numerous users on Twitter have already expressed dissatisfaction with the narrative that Turner is a bad mother. “Whoever is doing PR for Joe Jonas needs to be fired ASAP. Instead of making Joe look good, you’ve convinced the entire internet that he must have murdered Sophie Turner’s entire family or something,” commented one user on X (formerly Twitter).

“Why is a father looking after his children while the mother works in the headlines? Nobody would bat an eyelid if Sophie Turner was a housewife and Joe Jonas was the breadwinner, because these are the gender roles that society has expected,” commented lawyer Charlotte Proudman. The old tale of the bad mother is misogynistic, say critics.

PR experts explain the strategies

PR expert Molly McPherson regularly explains PR strategies, celebrity statements and the like on her TikTok channel. According to her own statement, she has already written numerous separation statements. And she knows which words mean what. “When I see the word ‘consensual’ in a statement, it usually means it’s not that consensual,” she says of Jonas and Turner. That’s not always the case, but most of the time. “We don’t know what happened in this marriage, but if I were to speculate, I would say that Joe Jonas is the one who goes a little crazy,” she explains. McPherson blames the many stories in US tabloids that suggested Turner was a bad mother on Jonas’ crisis PR team.

Bethenny Frankel, US entrepreneur and reality star, also commented on the event on TikTok. “It’s kill or be killed,” she said of the battle of the PR teams behind two separate celebrities. And so, Frankel believes, Jonas’ team simply started influencing the reports earlier in their client’s favor. Too early, because the tactic seems particularly obvious to women online. “Don’t underestimate the intelligence and instincts of women,” says Frankel.

What actually happened behind the scenes between Joe Jonas and the “Game of Thrones” actress is probably only known to the two of them and their closest circle. One thing is certain: blame online should be treated with caution.
