In total 64 directors faced each other in rounds, and Nolan defeated Denis Villenueve (Dune) with 56 percent of the votes. According to the website, almost 30,000 votes were cast in the final round.
In the semi-final rounds, Damien Chazelle (La La Land) and Jordan Peele (Get Out) were eliminated. Sam Mendes (Skyfall), Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Alex Garland (Annihilation) reached the quarterfinals.

Nolan is perhaps best known for directing the trilogy The Dark Knight starring Christian bale as batman. His other films include thrillers memento and The Prestigeand sci-fi blockbusters inception, Interstellar and Tenet.
The director’s latest film is Oppenheimera historical biopic about the life of the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer interpreted by Cillian Murphy. The film, which premiered in July, is the third highest-grossing film of 2023 so far, behind Barbie and Super Mario Bros. The Movie.
