Peter Jackson directed his first music video, creating the visual accompaniment for the long-awaited song “final” by the Beatles.
The highly anticipated song titled “Now And Then” was created after the two surviving members, Ringo Starr and Paul MCCARTNEY, joined forces once again to create the final song featuring all four members of the band. The song was made using previously recorded demos of John Lennon and George Harrisonrecovered with the help of artificial intelligence technology, and is scheduled for global release this Thursday, November 2.
The video for “Now and Then”
The official video was directed by Peter Jackson and is made up of archive images of the Fab Four.
Made in conjunction with Apple Corps Ltd., Capitol and UMe, the project will mark the first music video the filmmaker has ever worked on and is a continuation of his work on the 2021 docuseries about the band titled The Beatles: Get Back.
“When Apple asked me to make the music video, I was very reluctant: I thought my next few months would be so much more fun if that difficult task was someone else’s problem, and I could be like any other Beatles fan. enjoying the anticipation of the night before Christmas as the release of a new Beatles song and music video approached,” he said in a press release, explaining how the project came about.
“To be honest, just thinking about the responsibility of having to make a music video worthy of the latest song the Beatles will release produced a collection of anxieties almost too overwhelming to deal with,” he added, saying he then took advantage of the lack. of relevant images of members as an excuse to try to get away from the project.
“A Beatles music video should have great Beatles imagery at its core. There is no way to use actors or CGI Beatles. Every take of The Beatles had to be genuine,” he added.
This concern was quickly combated, Jackson revealed, confirming that the upcoming music video will combine new footage of McCartney and Starr, as well as 14 hours of newly discovered footage of the members together in 1995.
“I felt swept away because they quickly addressed my concerns. Paul and Ringo recorded footage of themselves performing and sent it to me. Apple unearthed more than 14 hours of forgotten movies shot during 1995 recording sessionsincluding several hours of Paul, George and Ringo working on ‘Now And Then’, and he gave it all to me,” he revealed.
“Sean [Lennon, el hijo de John] and Olivia [Harrison, la esposa de George] They found great never-before-seen home movie footage and sent it over. To top it off, Pete Best kindly provided us with a few precious seconds of The Beatles performing in their leather suits, the first known Beatles film and never seen before.”
Elsewhere in his statement, the filmmaker confirmed that the project was put together with the help of Jabez Olssen, who also worked on the documentary series Get Back, and also recruited George Harrison’s son Dhani to capture the right atmosphere for the film. clue.
“I realized that we needed each viewer’s imagination to do what we couldn’t, and for each viewer to create their own personal moment of farewell to The Beatles… Fortunately, Dhani Harrison was visiting New Zealand at the time . I talked about the ending with him and described a vague idea I’d been toying with. His eyes immediately filled with tears, so that’s how we did it,” he recalls.
“Fortunately, we also found a collection of unseen outtakes in the vault, where the Beatles are relaxed, funny and quite sincere. These become the backbone of our midsection and we wove humor into some footage filmed in 2023,” he added. “The result is pretty crazy and gave the video a much-needed balance between sad and funny.”
Jackson continued: “Having come to the end, I’m very happy to not be waiting for someone else’s ‘Now And Then’ music video to be released. “I am genuinely proud of what we did and will cherish it for years to come.”
The Peter Jackson-directed music video for “Now And Then” will premiere worldwide on Friday (November 3) on The Beatles’ official YouTube channel.
