Barcelona is renewed and shines with the return of tourism

On this note, we will walk from new places to classic must-haves that do not go out of style.

Artists (edit)

Among the recent openings worth visiting is the Museum of Modern Art (Moco). Inaugurated on October 16 of this year in the Gothic Quarter and following in the footsteps of its mother headquarters in Amsterdam, it invites you to experience a wonderful exhibition of contemporary and urban artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, Kaws , Yayoi Kusama and Bansky, among others. There are from light installations, to large sculptures and paintings that question the current world. Adapted to the new times, it also has an exclusive space for digital art or NFT, acronyms that refer to the non-fungible token, a cryptographic technology based on “blockchain”. A highly recommended visit for adults and children.

Right next door is the Picasso museum. It is an obligatory stop in Barcelona, to which it is recommended to go early and with time since due to the limited capacity the tickets fly. Most of the paintings exhibited in the museum correspond to the period between 1890 and 1917 lived by the artist.

At the other end of Barcelona, in the Gracia area, is the Park Guell, an immense park with gardens and sculptures designed by Antonio Gaudí. Those who visit the park can take the opportunity to go a few meters from there to the Gaudí Experience. It is a new way to get to know the multifaceted architect, his history and his inspirations, through a 4D movie, which lasts approximately 15 minutes. It invites you to an immersive experience with armchair movements and other sensations that are fun to experience.

Those who are looking for museums or art centers should check the CaixaForum agenda, a cultural center located on the Montjuic mountain. former textile factory, which is one of the masterpieces of modernism. There are usually exhibitions, digital art activities, among others.

The Joan Miró Foundation, also on Montjuic, is a wonderful space that disseminates Miró’s work: paintings and immense sculptures under a view of Barcelona that is a privilege.

A star Is Born

A historic milestone is about to happen at the mythical Sagrada Familia: the completion of the tower of the Virgin Mary will see the monumental basilica projected by the brilliant mind of Antonio Gaudí reach 127 meters in height next month. In this way, it will be proclaimed as the first completed tower of the six central towers. Meanwhile, a bright star will be placed on another of the towers, which will be a striking object of interest. As Jordi Fauli i Oller, the architect director of the construction team of the Sagrada Familia, explained to Ámbito, the work is expected to be completed by 2025.

For the little ones

Barcelona is a hyper-friendly city to go with children. The beaches of La Barceloneta are a great attraction if the weather is good. Nearby, the aquarium, which is the largest in Europe, surprises with the diversity of marine species, its transparent tunnel that invites you to enjoy an underwater walk on foot and the possibility of knowing the bottom of the Mediterranean (today there are some 11,000 specimens of 450 different species). Fact: younger children are fascinated by the submarine replica at the end of the tour.

The Museu de la Xocolata is a space full of chocolate sculptures made by the city’s pastry chefs: There are sweet replicas of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, even characters from the latest Pixar movie or Disney classics.

CosmoCaixa: For kids and not so much, the Barcelona science museum has different spaces to explore the enigmas of the universe, learn the secrets of the Amazon rainforest, investigate the solar system, among others.

Gastronomy

To live a 100% Catalan experience, the Santa Caterina Market is an excellent option to sit at a bar to taste some tapas or an omelette with ham accompanied by a beer. While the most popular is La Boquería, this one is much quieter and a little less touristy.

El Xampanyet, one block from the Picasso museum, is another recommended for tapas and cuisine inherited from the grandmother. Of course, it is very crowded so it is common to have to wait to enter.

Some menus of 10/15 euros, include starter, main course and dessert or drink. To find those who enjoy a good paella in their options, it is recommended to go to the port area.

In the middle of the afternoon, who doesn’t want a good hot chocolate? Thick, tasty, sweet. Characteristic of the area, it is a delight for the palate.

Other options

All have an audio guide or a guided tour. Some proposals are known, but no less important: Casa Batló, Casa de les Punxes, La Pedrera, Palacio de la Música, Poble Espanyol, Pabellón Mies Van Der Roche, are some of the possibilities.

Before traveling, it is recommended to visit the website of the Barcelona Department of Tourism, which has detailed information on all activities (visitbarcelona.com).

October was record

The hotels in the Catalan capital received 494,753 tourists in October, according to the data just published by the Barcelona City Council from the Hotel Occupancy Survey of the National Institute of Statistics.

This figure is the best of the whole year and even surpassed the records of the summer months. Specifically, in October 53,00 more travelers passed through the city’s establishments than in August, 83,000 more than in September and 10,000 more than in July. Approximately one in four clients of Barcelona hotels in the month of October resides in Spain.

In this way, and despite the covid, in Barcelona they are excited to return to full normality (the numbers are not yet those of the prepandemic).

For now, the capacity is limited in several activities, the chinstrap is only mandatory indoors but not outdoors. Of course, we must see how the infections evolve in the rest of the continent so that it does not affect Spain.
