Ryan Gosling took aim at the Oscars for ignoring Margot Robbie: “There is no Ken without Barbie”

The star of “Barbie”nominated for best supporting actor, spoke out against the Academy’s snubs toward Margot Robbie in the category of best actress and Greta Gerwig in the best direction.

Ryan Gosling’s message after the Oscar nominations

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my peers alongside such notable artists in a year of so many wonderful films. “And I never thought I’d say this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for playing a plastic doll named Ken,” Gosling’s statement begins. “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and There is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbiethe two people most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film.”

Gerwig and Robbie were two of the leading contenders heading into Tuesday’s nominations, with many experts and awards enthusiasts projecting the pair to receive recognition. Robbie was nominated as the film’s producer in the best picture category, while Gerwig received the award for best adapted screenplay. But the couple’s respective omissions in the actress and director fields were two of the most talked-about snubs of the day.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without his talent, courage and genius. “To say I’m disappointed they weren’t nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling continues.

“Against all odds, with nothing more than a pair of soulless, scantily clad, and fortunately crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, propelled culture, and made history. Your work should be recognized along with that of other very deserving nominees. That being said, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Gosling gives a nod to Ferrera, who earned a best supporting actress nomination for her performance in “Barbie.” The comedy racked up eight nominations in total, including costume design, production design and two original songs (“I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”).

Gosling is nominated alongside Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Robert DeNiro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). It is the actor’s third Oscar nomination, after two previous nominations for “Half Nelson” (2006) and “La La Land” (2016).

America Ferrara on the non-nomination of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig

During an interview with the Variety portal, the actress also expressed her disappointment at the absence of Gerwig and Robbie in their respective categories.

“Greta has done almost everything a director could do to deserve it”, said. “Creating this world and taking something that had no inherent value to most people and turning it into a global phenomenon. “It’s disappointing not to see it on that list.”

Regarding Robbie, he added: “What Margot achieved as an actress is truly incredible”.
