Oppenheimerof Christopher Nolanwill be released in Japanese theaters, despite public criticism regarding the film’s sensitive subject matter.
The biographical film starring Cillian Murphy was a controversial issue in Japan, where two atomic bombs were detonated in 1945, killing hundreds of thousands of Japanese citizens.
The film with the most nominations for the 2024 Oscars was released in most territories in July by Universal and grossed $950 million at the global box office. But Toho-Towa, which handles most of Universal’s titles in Japan, did not release the film.
In December it was reported that independent film distributor Bitters End will release the film in theaters nationwide. It has now been confirmed that the film will hit theaters on March 10.
The reasons to release Oppenheimer in Japan
“Bitters End will release Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ in Japan in 2024. The decision was made after months of thoughtful dialogue associated with the subject and recognizing the particular sensitivity toward us Japanese,” the indie label said in a statement (via Variety ).
“After screening the film, We feel Christopher Nolan has created a singular cinematic experience that transcends traditional storytelling and should be seen on the big screen.. “We invite the audience to see the film with their own eyes when it comes to Japan.”
Oppenheimer See Murphy as Robert J. Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project and is credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb.” The film also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Florence Pugh.
