For the series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” Barbra Streisand sings the song “Love Will Survive”, composed by Hans Zimmer, among others. She also wants to see it understood politically at the moment.
Barbra Streisand (82) has released a song for a television series for the first time and released her first single in around six years. The Jewish Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner had previously announced that the song was intended to be a statement in connection with the series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”.
“With anti-Semitism on the rise around the world, I wanted to sing ‘Love Will Survive’ as part of this series to remember the six million people who lost their lives less than 80 years ago,” Streisand said. “And also to say that even in the darkest times, the power of love can triumph and endure.”
Recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of William Ross, the track was written by German-American, two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer (“Dune”, “The Lion King”) and film and TV composer Kara Talve . The text was written by award-winning Charlie Midnight.
Streisand never wanted to set foot on German soil
The song is a love hymn with lots of strings and the unmistakable melt and schmaltz of Streisand’s voice. For decades it was said about Streisand that she never wanted to set foot on German soil because of her Jewish heritage and the Nazi era. But then she did, albeit late. She has only given concerts in Berlin in 2007 and 2013.
Streisand, who turned 82 on April 24, is known for her political activism. In 2018, her album “Walls” with the single “Don’t Lie to Me” was seen as a statement against the political climate in America during Donald Trump’s presidency.
The six-part series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” with Jonah Hauer-King, Anna Próchniak, Harvey Keitel, Melanie Lynskey and Jonas Nay can be seen in Germany from May 8th on Sky.
Based on true events
The series tells the story of the Slovak Jew Lali, who is deported to the Nazi death camp in 1942 and is required to tattoo identification numbers on the arms of fellow prisoners. Lali (Hauer-King) falls in love with fellow prisoner Gita (Próchniak).
The series is based on the experiences of Lali Sokolov and is inspired by the bestselling book “The Tattooist of Auschwitz: The True Story of Lale Sokolov” (2018) by Heather Morris. According to Sky, the book sold 12 million copies worldwide.
