Madonna caused a sensation in Mexico with an Instagram post in which she reportedly appeared wearing clothes designed by Frida Kahlo.
Madonna (65) has told her fans about a special experience. “A wonderful souvenir – a visit to the family home of my eternal muse – Frida Kahlo – in Mexico City,” she wrote in a series of pictures. In the photos, she can be seen in a dress embroidered with flowers, among other things. “For me, it was magical to try on her clothes and jewelry, read her diaries and letters and see photos that I had never seen before,” wrote the singer about the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). The post not only received enthusiastic comments, some users wondered how Madonna had gotten hold of the valuable pieces.
“Holy clothes” in Madonna’s hands
“You really let her wear Frida’s clothes?” asked one user. Another added: “I’m Mexican and I’m sure no Mexican could ever do that.” Additionally, one comment read: “I don’t know what’s worse: the audacity of allowing her to wear Frida’s sacred clothes or Madonna’s audacity and arrogance in wearing them. […] I have visited this museum many times and enter this temple of memories in silence and with respect for the memory of Frida’s soul.”
The institution did not want to accept the fact that people might believe that the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City provided Madonna’s clothes and clarified this in a statement. The clothing and jewelry in the collection would be subject to “strict conservation measures” and it would not be allowed to borrow them “for personal use.” “We would like to clarify that the clothing, photos and objects that Madonna has published on her various social media pages do not belong to the Casa Azul collection,” the statement continued.
The museum, which the singer is said not to have visited during her recent stay in Mexico for her “Celebration Tour”, would however like to thank Madonna for the singer “celebrating and honoring Frida’s legacy”. that Madonna is said to have instead visited Frida Kahlo’s family in El Pedregal in the south of Mexico City and the photos were taken there.
