White braid, sunglasses and starched collar – fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld has always gone his own way. Now he has his own way in his hometown.
Five years after the death of the fashion czar, Hamburg now has a Karl Lagerfeld Promenade. A 155-meter-long footpath and hiking trail along an Alster canal in the city center was named after the fashion designer on Thursday. Culture Senator Carsten Brosda (SPD) said at the inauguration that Lagerfeld’s unmistakable style had made him a pacesetter in the international fashion world. “Lagerfeld’s artistic spirit has also left its mark in his birthplace – now also in the form of a promenade.”
The location for the new Karl Lagerfeld Promenade was not chosen by chance. “Firstly, the Chanel boutique, which borders the promenade. His spiritual gas station, the Felix Jud bookstore, is also just a few hundred meters down the promenade,” explained Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda (49) to NDR.
Karl Lagerfeld: Creative Director at Chanel for 36 years
White braid, sunglasses and starched collar: Lagerfeld had stylized himself into an artistic figure and a myth. He influenced fashion for more than half a century. He revamped tweed jackets with ribbons and fringes, and combined haute couture dresses with sneakers. He also discovered top models and made stars of Claudia Schiffer and later his male muse Baptiste Giabiconi.
Lagerfeld was the son of a canned milk manufacturer from Hamburg and spent his childhood on a country estate in Schleswig-Holstein. His mother later sent him to school in the French capital Paris, where he made a career in the fashion industry. He was creative director of the luxury brand Chanel for 36 years and was considered a formative force in the international fashion world.
