Joe Alwyn: Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend talks about the relationship

He was the man at Taylor Swift’s side for almost seven years: British actor Joe Alwyn and the US superstar met at the Met Gala in New York in 2016. They split up in spring last year. Swift and Alwyn kept their relationship out of the public eye as much as possible over the years. Even after the relationship ended, the 33-year-old didn’t say a word about his relationship with the most famous woman in the world – until now. In an interview with the British newspaper “The Sunday Times”, Alwyn spoke about Swift for the first time.

“I hope everyone can empathise and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving and committed relationship of over six and a half years. It is a difficult thing to deal with,” said Alwyn. He stressed that it was not only the separation that affected him, but also the fact that it made headlines around the world. “What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that a week later it is suddenly public and the outside world can interfere,” explained Alwyn. In tabloids and social media, the issue has been “dissected and distorted beyond recognition”. “But the truth is that there will always be a difference between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that.”

Alwyn did not divulge any specific details about his relationship with Taylor Swift. “As everyone knows, we both decided together to keep the more private details of our relationship to ourselves. It was never something we exploited. I see no reason to change that now.” The Brit did not want to reveal whether he was still in contact with Swift or was now in a new relationship. Nor did he say whether he had listened to Swift’s new album “The Tortured Poets Department.”

In 2022, the actor revealed in an interview with that he has a WhatsApp group with actress Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. Its name: “The Tortured Man Club”. The similarity to Swift’s album title is certainly no coincidence. The singer is known for using her music to process her love affairs and breakups. Several songs on the new record are associated with Joe Alwyn. For example, the titles “So Long, London”, “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” and “The Black Dog”. The latter says: “And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog / And pierce new holes in my heart”.

There is actually a pub in the London district of Vauxhall called “The Black Dog”. Since the album was released, Swift fans have been flocking to the pub. The pub has now cleverly taken advantage of the crowds and launched a new one. A black dog now adorns hoodies, T-shirts and bags. It is not clear whether Joe Alwyn is also a regular visitor. He told the “Sunday Times” that in his free time he loves meeting friends, travelling and going to the pub. However, he has never been to Vauxhall. Whether that is a fib is something only the actor himself knows. Pub owner Lily Bottomley told him a few weeks ago: “I don’t want to give too much away. But we have a certain blonde regular customer who comes by regularly, let’s put it that way.”
