Mourning for Hollywood star Shelley Duvall. The actress, who was particularly successful in the 1970s, has died at the age of 75.
The actress Shelley Duvall (1949-2024), known among other things from Stanley Kubrick’s (1928-1999) horror classic “Shining”, has died. Duvall died in her sleep in her home in the US state of Texas from the effects of diabetes, according to her life partner, the musician Dan Gilroy (77). She was 75 years old.
Muse of Robert Altman and global success with “Shining”
Duvall first appeared as an actress in the early 1970s. The legendary US filmmaker Robert Altman (1925-2006) discovered her and cast her in the experimental comedy “Brewster McCloud”. Further appearances in Altman films such as “McCabe & Mrs. Miller”, “Nashville” and “Three Women” followed over the course of the decade. For the latter title, Duvall received the award for Best Actress at the 30th Cannes Film Festival in 1977.
But Duvall was also successful as an actress in the 1970s beyond the Altman universe. Her brief appearance in Woody Allen’s (88) comedy “Annie Hall” remains unforgettable. However, her most famous role was in 1980 in the Stephen King adaptation “The Shining” by master director Kubrick. The horror film, in which Duvall’s character is tormented by her on-screen husband Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson, 87), regularly comes in the top spots in votes for the best horror films of all time. With her expressive, large eyes, which could convey all the terror of the story, Duvall fit perfectly into the upscale horror genre.
