Friends and companions of US actress Shannen Doherty (1971-2024), who died on Saturday, July 13, mourn the loss of the former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star. Doherty succumbed to her long-standing battle with cancer at the age of 53. Now her first husband, actor Ashley Hamilton (49), has also found emotional words about the death of his ex-wife.
Deceased actress was his “guardian angel”
“Shannen was not only my wife, she was my guardian angel. Even though things didn’t always go as we hoped, she was there for me in some of my darkest times,” Hamilton recalls in an interview. The death of his ex-wife broke his heart, said the actor, known from films such as “Beethoven.”
“Seeing her fight this terrible disease so stoically was an inspiration to many, but even more so to me, as I myself am a cancer survivor,” the 49-year-old says admiringly of Doherty, to whom he was briefly married from 1993 to 1994. He regrets that he never sought contact with her during Doherty’s battle with cancer. Now “the world has lost a free-spirited soul and my heart aches for her and for all who loved her. May she rest in peace.”
Agreement with ex-husband just one day before Doherty’s death
Shortly before her death, the actress was in a divorce battle with her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko (50). After eleven years of marriage, Doherty filed for divorce in April 2023 and demanded retroactive maintenance payments of more than 14,300 euros per month.
According to documents now available to the court, Doherty agreed to an “uncontested divorce” just one day before her death, on Friday, July 12, thereby waiving spousal support. Both parties had “entered into a written agreement regarding their assets and rights arising from the marriage or civil partnership, including maintenance.”
