The series “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” confirms its premiere date on Disney+

It is an adaptation of the bestseller “Kaiser Karl” by Raphaëlle Bacqué (published by Albin Michel) and comes to the screen for the first time bringing together a stellar cast.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeldthe original French series produced by Gaumont and Jour Premier Coming exclusively to Disney+ on August 7.

The new production about the German designer is full of friendships, rivalries, betrayals and passions in the Parisian nights of the 1970s.

What is Becoming Karl Lagerfeld about?

In 1972, Karl Lagerfeld (Daniel Bruhl) is 38 years old and does not yet sport his iconic hairstyle. He is a ready-to-wear designer unknown to the general public. While meeting and falling in love with Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin), an ambitious and tormented young dandy, the most mysterious of fashion designers dares to confront his friend – and rival – Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), a haute couture genius supported by the fearsome businessman Pierre Bergé (Alex Lutz).

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld immerses the audience in the 1970s, in Paris, Monaco and Rome, to narrate the extraordinary birth of this complex and iconic personality of Parisian haute couture, someone who is set to become the Emperor of fashion. Between glamour and ego clashes, grandiose parties and destructive passions, the audience will discover the story of Karl before Lagerfeld.

Cast of Becoming Karl Lagerfeld

Daniel Brühl (CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR) stars as the couturier alongside Théodore Pellerin (Solo) as Jacques de Bascher and Arnaud Valois (120 Beats Per Minute) as Yves Saint Laurent. Alex Lutz (Vortex) plays Pierre Bergé. Agnes Jaoui (For All Taste) plays Gaby Aghion, the founder of the Chloé fashion house, who contributed significantly to its fame. The cast is completed by the German actress Lisa Kreuzer (Dark) who plays Elisabeth Lagerfeld, Karl’s mother.

The series also features the personalities from the world of fashion and culture who rubbed shoulders with Karl Lagerfeld at the time.

Jeanne Damas brings Paloma Picasso to life and Claire Laffut is Loulou de La Falaise. The legendary actress Marlene Dietrich is played by Sunny Melles and Andy Warhol for Paul Spera.

Jérôme Salle is at the helm of the series and directed episodes 1, 2 and 6. He is also executive producer alongside producer Arnaud de Crémiers. Episodes 3, 4 and 5 are directed by Audrey Estrougo. Isaure Pisani-Ferry is the series creator, alongside Jennifer Have and Raphaëlle Bacqué. Pisani-Ferry is also head of scripts and has written all the episodes alongside Dominique Baumard, Jennifer Have and Nathalie Hertzberg.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld was born from the impulse of Christophe Riandee, vice CEO of the production company led by Sidonie Dumas. The series is produced by Isabelle Degeorges for Gaumont and Arnaud de Crémiers for Jour Premier.
