2 Simple Exercises to Combat Vertigo, According to Neurologists

He Vertigo is a surprisingly common problem which can be life-destabilizing, especially as people age. This sensation of moving or spinning is more common in women than men and often seems to come on suddenly. Symptoms of vertigo

Vertigo has many symptoms but some of them are:

  • Problems focusing the eyes.
  • Dizziness.
  • Hearing loss in one or both ears.
  • Loss of balance (may cause falls)
  • Ringing in the ears.
  • Nausea and vomiting, which causes loss of body fluids.

Simple exercises to reduce vertigo

1- Epley maneuver

This vertigo exercise is often performed by a physical therapist like Amanda Beaty who works in the Duke Health Department of Rehabilitation Services and is board certified in neurological physical therapy. During the Epley maneuver, the head is tilted in different directions to allow the displaced crystals to fall back into place.

2- Semont maneuver

  • The Semont maneuver is a good exercise to try if the Epley maneuver doesn’t work or if you can’t tolerate lying on your back. Here’s how to perform it:
  • If the affected ear is the right one, sit on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor. Turn your head 45 degrees to the left (in the opposite direction to the affected ear).
  • Quickly lie down on your right side in bed with your head facing upwards. Relax for 30 seconds.

What not to do

  • Perform vertigo exercises on your own before you are diagnosed with BPPV. You could make things worse or unwittingly treat the wrong ear.
  • Some exercises that involve a lot of changes in head position, such as yoga or weight lifting, can make vertigo worse.
