“Alien: Romulus”: what the first reviews of the film say

The first reactions to Alien: Romulus They have praised the film as “the best movie since Aliens” and “heartbreaking, gripping and wonderfully dark.”

The new sequel, the seventh film in the horror and science fiction series, premieres this Thursday (August 15) and is directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (Don’t breathe).

The world premiere of the film was held in Los Angeles last night (August 12) and many in attendance praised the film, which is set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).

What the first reviews say about Alien: Romulus

“ALIEN: ROMULUS is the best Alien movie since Aliens. The perfect bridge between the sci-fi horror of Scott’s original and the thrilling action of Cameron’s sequel“It gets more exciting with every scene,” shared ComingSoonNet’s Jonathan Sim. “It gets more exciting with every scene, culminating in a mind-blowing final act that proves Fede Alvarez never holds back. Absolute madness filled with new ideas.”

Variety’s Courtney Howard said: “Fede Alvarez’s Alien Romulus is twisted, gripping and wonderfully dark (everything from the story to Olivares’ photography to Wallfisch’s score). It innovatively presents clever and clever stuff, subtly touching on the greatest hits. Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson dominate. This is great!”

Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter also praised the latest film in the franchise. He wrote: “ALIEN: ROMULUS: It has all the hallmarks you’d expect from an Alien movie.but it never feels like it’s pandering to nostalgia or fan service… and even goes in crazy new directions. Fede Alvarez and the cast just gave birth to the best movie of the summer.”

Despite the praise, there was room for doubt, especially regarding the film’s ending.

Jake Hamilton, co-host of Cinema Blend’s podcast Reel Blend, was disappointed by the ending.

He wrote: “There is a lot about ALIEN: ROMULUS that I like – some truly creative moments in the first two acts that I REALLY liked. However, The ending takes a BIG twist that just didn’t work for me and left me feeling disappointed.”.

What is Alien: Romulus about?

While exploring the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabella Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen WuFede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) directs from a script he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
