Oprah Winfrey: She has made her peace with age

Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey knows that “there isn’t much time left.” She wants to make the most of the last phase of her life.

While old age scares others, Oprah Winfrey (70) looks at it with serenity: “It gives you a sense of knowing that there is not much time left. And I have made my peace with that knowledge,” the talk show host answers a question from US presenter Al Roker (70) about whether she feels a deeper sense of gratitude than when she was 50 or 60. “It gives me a sense of urgency to live well.”

US talk show icon Winfrey appeared alongside Roker, who was celebrating his 70th birthday. The long-time weather forecaster and the US talk show host, who turned 70 in January, spoke openly about getting older and talked about the lessons they had learned in life.

“It’s time if you want to keep running”

Winfrey apparently realized in 2021 that she would not live forever but wanted to have a few more good years when she underwent knee surgery. “I was getting weaker and weaker, to the point where it was hard to even walk down two steps to get in the car. You know that pain,” she told Roker, who has also had two knee surgeries. “When I finally went to the orthopedic surgeon and asked, ‘I don’t know, is it time?’ the doctor replied, ‘It’s time if you want to keep running. You like running? Then it’s time.'”

Looking back, she knows: “It was the best thing I ever did. I felt like I had a completely new opportunity to live in my body, something I hadn’t been able to do for years because I was overweight,” which made her knee problems even worse. She says her highest weight was once around 107 kilograms.

Oprah Winfrey concludes: “I think I have aged into a form of myself that is wiser, that is certainly stronger, that is more alive and more aware than I ever was.”
