For his “curious eye and open mind”: Wim Wenders is awarded the European Film Prize for his life’s work.
Great honour for Wim Wenders (79). The director is being honoured by the European Film Academy for his life’s work. This was announced by the institution that awards the European Film Prize every year.
“With this award, we honor the outstanding work of Wim Wenders, who continues to explore and experiment with a curious eye and an open mind,” writes Matthijs Wouter Knol (47) of the Film Academy in his justification for the decision. Wim Wenders was himself president of the European Film Academy, founded in 1988, from 1996 to 2020.
Golden Palm and four Oscar nominations
Wim Wenders was born on August 14, 1945 as Wilhelm Ernst Wenders. As a founding member of the Filmverlag der Autoren, he was one of the key figures of the so-called New German Cinema in the 1970s. Wenders became world famous when he won the Golden Palm in Cannes for “Paris, Texas.”
Wim Wenders has been nominated for an Oscar four times in his career. Three of these were for his documentaries: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Pina,” and “The Salt of the Earth.” This year, the Düsseldorf native was nominated for an Oscar for the first time for a fictional film. His work “Perfect Days” was in the running for best international film – but for Japan and not for Germany.
Wim Wenders will receive the award for his lifetime achievement at the 37th European Film Awards, which will take place on December 7, 2024 in Lucerne.
