After three years, it’s over. News anchor Jan Hofer said goodbye to RTL Direkt on Thursday evening.
“One last time: Welcome to RTL Direkt.” These are words that will probably resonate with fans of newsman Jan Hofer for a while. Because yesterday evening the RTL presenter said goodbye to his viewers. In addition to topics such as Solingen, the traffic light government’s security package and the surprisingly low inflation rate, this program also focuses on the farewell.
“The next report should actually be due now, but the door opens and who comes in – Pinar Atalay,” says Hofer with a smile into the camera. In the next moment of the live broadcast, news colleague Atalay can be seen with a large bouquet of flowers. It is a surprise for the “news legend,” as Hofer calls her. “We’re not just letting you go like that,” she says to him.
Jan Hofer: “I was always there”
In a conversation with his colleague, Hofer finally reveals that he will not disappear completely from the scene: “I’m not out of the world, I’m sure I’ll pop up again somewhere, but not on RTL Direkt.” This is followed by a look back at the three years of ex-Mister Tagesschau at RTL Direkt and farewell words from companions from politics and the media.
“RTL Direct”
Bye, bye, Jan Hofer! The anchorman leaves the ship
Hofer was a newsreader for the Tagesschau on German television from 1985 to 2020. He then moved to RTL and took over the news program RTL Direkt. “It’s not my fault, but I was always there,” says Mister News to his colleague, “I came into people’s living rooms for many decades.” Careers like his or that of RTL colleague Peter Klöppel are not so common these days. But now he wants to concentrate more on his family.
At the end of the show, Hofer turns directly to the viewers and thanks them. “I’m sure we’ll see each other again,” says the 74-year-old. A promise to his fans – and to himself. Then he waves at the camera with a smile.
