(Re)design: Bathroom decoration: How to give your bathroom more charm

It is one of the rooms in an apartment that is used the most, but is often neglected: the bathroom. Regardless of the size and age of the bathroom, it can be visually enhanced with just a few decorative touches.

Even if we only spend an average of 30 minutes a day in the bathroom (primarily in the morning), the room should be given more importance. With a well-thought-out color concept, matching accessories and the right lighting, you can transform even the dreariest bathroom into a small oasis of well-being. And the best thing about it is that the redesign will cost you very little time and effort. All you need for a harmonious overall look is new bathroom decoration.

The colour concept

There are several ways to add some pep to the bare walls in the bathroom: either you paint the white areas with a light wall color (e.g. beige or gray) – this gives the room more depth. Choose an accent color that creates a harmonious overall picture with the tiles. And match the accessories to the wall design. Or you can leave the walls white and focus on the bathroom accessories. Match the colors of the towels and bath mat, shower curtain and soap dispenser. This will create a harmonious overall picture.

If you still have an ancient tiled mirror in your bathroom that no longer suits your taste, there are two options for redesigning it:

  1. Use a special tile paint that you can get at any hardware store (e.g. Toom). This way you can easily paint over the small tiles with the color of your choice.
  2. Use tile stickers that can be applied quickly and easily – and removed again.

And two more tips: Use natural materials (such as wood or marble) that underline your color concept. And don’t use more than three different colors so that your bathroom doesn’t look too busy.

The accessories

Shelves and (base) cabinets, but also window sills offer enough space for bathroom decoration. The accessories that transform your bathroom into a place of well-being are listed below:

  • Plant: If your bathroom has natural light, houseplants are the first choice. However, they should be able to withstand the high humidity and heat, such as ferns, ivy or orchids. If the bathroom has little space, you can also hang the plants under the ceiling.
  • Vases: If there is no window or only a very small one in the bathroom, use artificial plants, twigs and branches or dried grasses. These look particularly good in a decorative vase made of glass or porcelain. Make sure that the containers match the color scheme.
  • Mirror: In addition to a large wall mirror, other models can decorate the bathroom – such as a small cosmetic mirror or mirror panels (for example from Ikea) that are arranged on the wallpaper like a mosaic. They scatter the light into all corners and give the room more space.
  • Candles: From classic tea lights to colorful scented candles, flaming bathroom accessories are not only decorative but also practical. They provide warm light and make the room more cozy. It is important that the candles are not lit next to easily flammable textiles.
  • Cans: Typical everyday objects that are used for daily hygiene can be transferred into decorative containers or boxes. Whether it’s cream or cotton pads, make-up or jewelry – all objects disappear from view in no time with the right accessories.
  • Accesories: Liquid soap looks particularly good in a soap dispenser that matches the color, while solid soap can be stored in a decorative tray. Toothbrush cups can help keep the bathroom more organized and are also a real eye-catcher. Washcloths and guest towels can be hung on a stylish coat hook to create a harmonious interior design.

The lighting concept

It’s no secret that small rooms can appear larger when properly lit. This also applies to bathrooms: you can do this by installing several lamps. In addition to the classic ceiling light, which provides the necessary brightness, additional spotlights or wall lights can illuminate the room even better. Illuminated mirrors are particularly practical, as they give the bathroom more charm and also allow a better view of the face. If you want to give the bathroom even more structure, you should go for a balanced mix of light and shadow.
