Francella, who has demonstrated his acting versatility in films such as The Secret in Their Eyes and The Caretaker, will play a variety of characters in the episodes of Homo Argentum. According to Cohn and Duprat, the decision to have Francella star in all episodes is one of the key concepts of the series. The episodes, which will vary in format and content, will fall within the genre of dramatic comedies, a hallmark of the directors. Filming is scheduled to begin on October 28.
The fiction, influenced by the Italian comedy of the golden age, such as The Monsters, will present a panorama of the Argentine “national being” in a biting and sarcastic but reflective tone. Argentina, a country of immigrants with a powerful and unique idiosyncrasy, will be the setting for this anthology that will allow us to tell a diversity of situations and problems that are impossible to address in a conventional feature film. “All (the episodes) are within the framework of dramatic comedies, which is our hallmark as an author, as in films such as Competencia Oficial and El Ciudadano Ilustre or in series such as El Encargado or Nada,” they said. Duprat and Cohn a Variety .
Cohn and Duprat, who have directed international figures such as Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in Official Competition already Robert De Niro in the Argentine series Nothingthey explained that Homo Argentum will expose human nature without the layers of political correctness and hypocrisy that people acquire over time. The characters “will face conflicts that reflect the invisible pressure under which we live in a modern megalopolis,” Cohn and Duprat added. “We talk about buried contradictions, desires, frustrations, emergencies, paranoia and selfishness that result from our social life and that, when exposed without any kind of filter, pose profound moral dilemmas,” they added.
The production will be filmed 95% in Argentina, and it is expected that the anthology format will allow a collective reflection on contemporary society, transferable to the whole world. The fiction will focus on the “to be national in a biting and sarcastic but at the same time reflective tone. Argentina is a country of immigrants, whose character is a sum of different origins and nationalities: millions of Europeans arrived and mixed with native Argentines, creating a powerful and unique idiosyncrasy,” said the directors.
