Heidi Klum on the modeling industry: “The legs weren’t allowed to wobble”

Heidi Klum may be a top model, but she was never a classic catwalk model. In an interview, she explains why she rarely performed catwalks on the big stage.

Karl Lagerfeld’s devastating words about Heidi Klum are still unforgotten to this day. When he was asked about the German model as a guest on Johannes B. Kerner’s talk show, he said: “She was never in Paris. We don’t know her.”

15 years after Lagerfeld’s disparaging verdict, Klum has proven otherwise. She walked the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week for the Vetements label and reflected on the dark side of the fashion industry in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper.

The GNTM boss criticizes that this is still not diverse enough. “Changes always take a lot of time, especially when certain things have been modeled for ages. At my school I was told that I was too fat,” said Klum. Today that doesn’t seem to have changed everywhere. “If I tried to slip into some designers’ clothes now, I wouldn’t fit in because my figure doesn’t correspond to their expectations,” she said.

Especially as a young model, she felt the industry’s strict requirements. “There used to be really clear instructions: Your legs couldn’t wobble, everything had to be solid. And you had to eat healthily. My legs didn’t wobble, but there was something wrong with my physique,” says the 51-year-old. She was told at the time that she had a “pelvis that was happy to give birth”.

In the interview, Klum also talked about her show “Germany’s Next Top Model”. “Many people who have been on my show and then plunge into real modeling life say: ‘Wow, the diverse modeling that you show happens very rarely.’ Nevertheless, I try to push it further in the hope that things will change,” said the juror.

However, the fact that Klum is looking for different types of models is a rather new phenomenon. For a long time she and her jury colleagues were criticized for their statements and their behavior towards the then exclusively young women. Several former candidates have already accused Klum of bullying. In 2022, Youtuber Rezo took up the topic and published a video article in which he took up old GNTM scenes – some with shocking content. He showed scenes in which candidates were criticized for the appearance of their bodies. There is evidence of “structural body shaming,” said Rezo in his video.
