When Duchess Meghan recently attended a digital detox event for girls, she reportedly spoke about her experiences with cyberbullying and that she was one of the “most bullied people.”
There was a big surprise on a screen-free afternoon at the Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara organization in early October, where girls played together, made friendship bracelets or painted together. Duchess Meghan paid a visit to the digital detox event.
Girls Inc., an organization that offers national mentoring and leadership programs, partnered with responsible technology advocacy group #HalfTheStory to offer a program for students across the country. The two companies are financially supported by the Archewell Foundation, which belongs to Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, as well as the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation and Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures.
#HalfTheStory founder Larissa May spoke to Vanity Fair magazine about the afternoon with the Duchess. Together with the girls, they went through fictional scenarios of bullying. “We had the girls hold up these little emoji signs and talk about how each of these scenarios would have affected them emotionally,” said May. Duchess Meghan also spoke about her experiences and, according to Larissa May, is said to have said: “… Meghan talked about it “Being one of the most bullied people in the world.”
Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry take a stand against bullying
Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry are increasingly committed to combating bullying. In August, the couple founded the Parents’ Network, a portal for parents whose children have suffered harm on social media.
The aim of the newly launched program called Social Media U, which will be offered to students across the country, is to help young people connect without screens while encouraging them to use technology for positive connections and creativity. The content of the program was developed with the technical support of the Youth Advisory Board.
The afternoon with Duchess Meghan was also about sharing one’s own experiences and creating a space for vulnerability. “We talked to Stephanie (Girls Inc. CEO) and Meghan about what it really means to grow up in this digital age,” May said.
