Donald Trump doesn’t seem to have understood the message of “Full Metal Jacket”. There is no other way to explain a new election campaign clip.
In around three weeks (November 5th), the citizens of the USA will decide who will be allowed to move into the White House after President Joe Biden (81). The fact that the Republican candidate Donald Trump (78) likes to rely on perceived facts instead of reality in the election campaign has already been proven in numerous appearances. Just think of the myth that immigrants eat pets. With a new attack against Democrat Kamala Harris (59), Trump has now shown that he has completely misinterpreted the statement in the 1987 anti-war film “Full Metal Jacket” by Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999).
During a campaign appearance in the US state of California, Trump talked about the US military. To support his claim that Harris wants a “woke military,” a clip was shown comparing Trump’s vision of a strong military with that of the Democrat. The intentions of “Comrade Kamala” are represented, among other things, by a detail of Rachel L. Levine (66), a transgender woman who was appointed to the rank of admiral in the United States Public Health Service under Biden in 2021.
Mistreatment as an ideal
For Trump’s ideal of the US military, only excerpts from “Full Metal Jacket” are shown. Right at the beginning you can see how the tough instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, brilliantly portrayed by R. Lee Ermey, who died in 2018, brutally punches a cadet in the stomach. After the physical abuse comes the psychological: “You are dirt, the lowest form of life on earth. You are not even close to being human.” The conclusion drawn in Trump’s campaign ad, posted: “Let’s make the military great again.”
“Full Metal Jacket” as a prime example of a perfect US military? The message of Kubrick’s work could not be interpreted any more incorrectly. The degrading training of the young cadets shown in the film turns one of them into a murderer and then drives him to suicide. Later, the soldiers in the Vietnam War are portrayed as humanely brutalized killing machines without any morals. Every one of them who is still alive at the end of the film is severely traumatized and psychologically broken.
