A year ago, Elmar Wepper, a great German character actor, died who broke the hearts of many a colleague during his lifetime.
In contrast to his big brother Fritz, Elmar Wepper (1944-2023) fortunately no longer had to suffer from serious illnesses before his death. Although he appeared to be in great shape, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest out of the blue on October 31, 2023. The fact that his big heart should no longer beat filled his fans and colleagues with great sadness. And over the past year, many a belated declaration of love has come to light.
Brother Fritz: “I miss him with all my heart”
Shortly after his death, Elmar’s big brother Fritz Wepper (1941-2024), who survived him by five months, commented on the sudden loss in the magazine “Bunte” with moving words: “It came out of the blue, like a terrible lightning bolt.” . They had a “good brotherly relationship” until the end. “I wanted to say so much to him,” said the grieving actor. “I miss him with all my heart.”
A “true friend” for Uschi Glas
Uschi Glas (80), who appeared in front of the camera with Elmar Wepper for series such as “Two Munichers in Hamburg”, “Polizeiinspektion 1” and “Our Most Beautiful Years”, also appeared heartbroken in “Bild” and described the deceased as extraordinary amiable personality. “I’m at a loss for words and I’m deeply sad and shocked,” said the actress. “Elmar was not only one of my most important colleagues, but also a true friend for me and my husband. I had the most days of filming together in my career with Elmar. I now think of his wife, his son, the grandchildren. Elmar was happy with his family and his dog.”
When Uschi Glas published her autobiographical work “I was never a darling” in February 2024, she opened her memoirs with a quote that she said came from Elmar Wepper. It says: “What matters is what you do with your life. And love, my friend, it is the most important thing.”
She told “t-online”: “Fortunately, when I started writing the book, he was still with us. Starting the book with Elmar’s quote about life and love – that’s how I would like to pay tribute to him.” The deceased was “not only a reliable colleague, but also a good friend.” “He had great respect for people in general, especially for women,” said Glas. “It was always very nice to work with him.”
In love with the “Bavarian Robert Redford”
Uschi Glas shared this view with many of the late actor’s other colleagues. After Wepper’s death, some of them even confessed that they had been in love with the “Bavarian Robert Redford” for a while.
“Bergdoktor” star Monika Baumgartner (73), with whom Wepper was seen in numerous series and films, told the magazine “Bunte”: “The death of Elmar Wepper affected me, we knew each other well and, above all, for a long time. ” She blamed this on her nostalgic memories: “Like so many women, I immediately fell in love with him.”
Wepper’s long-time colleague and close friend Michaela May (72) also confirmed this view in an interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk’s “Abendschau”. There, with shining eyes, she raved about her first joint film project with the actor at the beginning of the 1970s. “He was already a soft, gentle man back then… And I really fell in love back then, I wrote to him too, but then he told me he had a girlfriend.” Despite this – or perhaps precisely because of this thwarted love story – the two always maintained a deep friendship until Wepper’s death.
His widow Anita can laugh again
May also has a similarly deep friendship with Elmar Wepper’s widow Anita Schierf (65), who initially withdrew for months after his unexpected death. Struck by her loss, she still didn’t have the strength to attend the funeral of her brother-in-law Fritz Wepper in April of this year. At the side of Michaela May, she only ventured back into public view for the first time at the end of May, on the occasion of the premiere of the social comedy “The Other Side of the Medal” in Munich.
Wepper’s last great love was visibly pleased with the general warmth that greeted her there. “I’m fine,” she told the magazine on the sidelines of the event. “I can go out among people again. The grief no longer has a complete grip on me.”
Late marriage of a wedding person
Elmar Wepper, previously known as a die-hard wedding person, married Anita in 2004 at the ripe old age of 59. In one, the Bavarian heartthrob said about this relationship just a few years before his death: “Ultimately, love is a thing between two people. It just has to be right. That’s the case with us and I don’t want to say anything more about it. It’s just wonderful .”
