In the past, Boy George has struggled with his fame. That has changed.
The British pop star Boy George is now relaxed about his fame. “Fame is a product of other people’s imagination. You are only famous because other people believe it,” the 63-year-old told the TV channel Sky News.
It used to be difficult for him to be known. The costs were high, said the frontman of the band Culture Club (“Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, “Karma Chameleon”). He had already spoken openly about his drug use in the past.
About the “Boy George” character
But in recent years he has been able to enjoy fame much more. “As I got older, I came to terms with the fact that I created this character Boy George,” said the singer, whose real name is George O’Dowd. “That I can either have as much fun with it as possible or portray it in fear.”
He imagined Boy George from the 1980s as a kind of cartoon character, he said. “Because on the one hand there was this public persona who was one thing and very recognizable. And then there was me behind it.” He used to have a real problem with fame. “Now I think it’s just a job.”
