Will her acting comeback last?

As Back in Action hits Netflix, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx talk magic on screen and challenges as parents.

“Back in Action” will be released on Netflix on January 17th. In the fast-paced action comedy, former superstar Cameron Diaz (52) celebrates his acting comeback after almost exactly ten years away from the cameras. In the work by director Seth Gordon (48), Diaz and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (57) fight as former CIA agents returning from retirement, not only with dangerous adversaries, but also with their pubescent teenage daughter Alice (McKenna Roberts, 17).

In an interview with the news agency spot on news, returnee Diaz reveals what motivated her to make her comeback to Hollywood. Her “Back in Action” partner Foxx, himself a father of two daughters, shares his tips and insights on raising children.

How did you come back for Back in Action after not working for a long time?

Cameron Diaz: This film was Jamie’s first. He is an executive producer. Director Seth Gordon and he came to me with it. I knew then that I would get a great partner, at the highest level. Even before I took this break, I felt it was such a privilege to be able to make films.

Now I had the opportunity to come back and make a film with such great talent and bring it out into the world for people to have a great time. I just thought, why not? This felt like the right thing to do.

Has it also inspired you to make more films? It was reported that you were already back in front of the camera with Keanu Reeves?

Diaz: I did, but that was completely different because it’s just a supporting role. It’s a small role but with Keanu. Jonah Hill directed it.

In “Back in Action” your characters always seem confident in their job as secret agents. As parents, however, they are a little more insecure. Does the film imitate life here?

Jamie Foxx: When you have kids, no one knows…

Diaz: …nobody knows what he’s doing.

Foxx: Kids give you a lot of tasks. I think our parents looked at us with frustration at some point, and that somehow gets passed on. Caring for your own children is the most difficult. This can throw you off track, no matter how good you are at your job. But when it comes to building a connection with your children, it may not be so easy, but you still get through it.

They have such wonderful chemistry on screen, work very harmoniously together and seem to be having a lot of fun doing it. How did this come about?

Foxx: It was because of the good script and the group of people that came together for the project. I remember meeting in New York before filming started in a lounge somewhere in New York. There was just such a cool, “Hey, how are you?” This coolness, which you don’t even notice at that moment, is transferred to the screen and it pays off.

Diaz: And we also made the same film. That always helps. Sometimes you work with an actor and it’s difficult to agree on the same film, to establish an understanding of what should be portrayed on the screen, what the tone should be or the dynamics should be. However, we knew what film we wanted to make.

The central family conflict in this film is between your characters, the parents, and your daughter. In your experience, what is a good way to resolve such conflicts?

Foxx: House arrest (laughs). No, I don’t think there is a formula or magic, anything that can make everything better. You’re just there.

Diaz: Our characters are hiding something from their children. This inevitably creates tension. They can’t tell them exactly what they want to say because they don’t want to tell the kids this big, potentially life-changing secret. So they find it difficult to communicate with their own children or be honest with them. And I think the key to parenting is to be really honest with your children. It’s about not lying to them.
