Berlinale 2025: Who is coming and who is in the race for the bears?

From February 13th to 23rd, the 75th edition of the Berlinale will increase in the German state capital. Whether in the race for the golden and the various silver bears or out of competition – this year again numerous national and international stars are expected in Berlin. Everything worth knowing about the upcoming Berlinale.

The Berlinale is under a new management this year. Instead of the previous leadership duo Carlo Chatrian (53) and Mariëtte Rissenbeek (69), it will be realized for the first time by Tricia Tuttle (55) in 2025. The American is very familiar with the organization of large film festivals, from 2018 to 2022 she steered the fortunes of the London Film Festival.

As usual, a completely new jury will be found again this year to decide on the awarding of the prices. In 2025, the director, screenwriter and producer Todd Haynes (64) received the honor of providing the international jury as president. The Californian has directed films such as “Carol”, “May December” or the Bob-Dylan-Biopic “I’m not there”. His jury still includes Nabil Ayouch (55), Maria Schrader (59), Bina Daigeler (60), Fan Bingbing (43), Rodrigo Moreno (52) and Amy Nicholson (46).

At the start of the Berlinale, Tom Tykwers (59) will open the festival with Lars Eidinger (49) and Milena Nicolette Krebitz as a world premiere. The drama is shown out of competition.

While the winners of the Golden and Silver Bears still have to be chosen, a winner has already been determined: The Scottish actress and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (64) will be honored this year with the golden honorary bear for her life’s work. The price is awarded to her at the opening gala in the Berlinale Palace.

19 works are in competition for the golden bear this year. These include Richard Linklaters (64) New film “Blue Moon”, which should ensure international glamor. The US drama combines Ethan Hawke (54), Margaret Qualley (30) and Andrew Scott (48) in front of the camera. “If I had legs i’d Kick You” also comes from the USA, in which Rose Byrne (45) and the upcoming Oscar host Conan O’Brien (61) play roles.

For Mexico, Michel Francos (45) “Dreams” goes into the race, in which Jessica Chastain (47) held the leading role. From Great Britain, Rebecca Lenkiewicz (57) starts with “Hot Milk” and its leading actors Emma Mackey (29), Fiona Shaw (66) and Vicky Krieps (41). Germany is represented with “Was Marielle Weiß” by Frédéric Hambalek (38) and various co -productions.

The upcoming films and stars will not be happy to receive an award. Outside of the competition, however, the Berlinale shows works that could sometimes provide the greatest interest among the audience. For example, James Mangolds (61) Bob-Dylan-Biopic “Like a Complete Unknown”, which will start in Germany on February 27th. Fans, of course, hope that the cast of the Oscar candidate around Timothée Chalamet (29), Edward Norton (55) and Elle Fanning (26) will be in Berlin.

The new film by the “Parasite” director Bong Joon-Ho (55) is also shown out of competition. In “Mickey 17” there are, among others, Robert Pattinson (38), Steven Yeun (41), Toni Collette (52) and Mark Ruffalo (57). And thanks to “The Thing with Feather”, the likelihood of finding Benedict Cumberbatch (48) in Berlin in February.
