For decades, the entrepreneur with prominent guests caused flash of lightning. This time his chair remains empty during the state ball. Nevertheless, stars and asterisks are expected at the Waltz Festival.
The Vienna Opera Ball has to get by on Thursday after Richard Lugner’s death without the most dazzling personality on the dance floor. However, his family wants to keep him remembered as a “Mister Opera Ball”. One day before the event, US artist Alec Monopoly presented a huge portrait of the Society lion in ball clothing on the facade of the Lugner shopping center.
“Graffiti is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful person,” said his daughter Jacqueline Lugner. She will visit the Austrian state ball, but will symbolically keep an empty chair for her father in her lodge.
Leni Klum is expected on the dance floor
With paid star guests such as Joan Collins, Kim Kardashian or most recently Priscilla Presley, Richard Lugner had provided international shine on the opera ball for decades. But even after his death in August at the age of 91, some celebrities and starlets that were invited by other entrepreneurs are expected this time – including Model Leni Klum, the daughter of Heidi Klum. Bruce Darnell has already worried a frack for the ball, as the TV personality announced on Instagram. The firm in the Vienna State Opera is based on terrorist attacks and threats under particularly high police protection, as the security authorities said. Hundreds of officials guard the approximately 5,200 guests who have to prepare for thorough security controls before the start of the event.
