Three days of silence at the Benediktushof: An experience report

I wonder if I get the unanswered emails? weekend can finally be checked off? And hopefully my little one won’t be bored. Do I have any medication left in case he gets sick? Oh crap, I wanted to concentrate on my breathing to prepare myself. First take a deep breath and feel the air in your nose. Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Then continue breathing naturally through your nose. Oh no, it looks like a traffic jam up there. And I still have to refuel. But not at the next gas station. The guy made a rude Bockwurst joke the other day. I don’t feel like it at all. Bock and Bockwurst, somehow it fits. Ahhh, stuck with nonsensical thoughts again!

During the six-hour drive from Hamburg to Holzkirchen near Würzburg, I actually wanted to prepare myself for what was to await me at the Benediktushof there: three days filled with walking meditation, contemplation and mindfulness exercises – and above all: absolute silence. I had enrolled in an introductory contemplation course and wanted to expand my meditation practice. The ten minutes in the morning that I take to meditate every day before I take my son to school and the apartment is usually full of wild, loud children in the afternoon have been very good for me over the past two years.
