Developer conferences of international technology groups are usually not lacking in spectacles and superlatives. In the past two years of the pandemic, however, this type of event has lost its attractiveness.
At the Internet company Google, the developer conference 2020 was canceled without replacement, only a few highlights were presented in the previous year. It was different this week: Google presented some new products – and above all wants to declare war on Apple.
- This year’s focus from Google is its in-house Pixel Watch, a smart watch, which is intended for users of Android smartphones. This is the first smartwatch from Google, it will be launched in autumn. As with the Apple Watch, fitness and contactless payment should be central applications. Google uses the technology of the fitness band specialist Fitbit, which has belonged to the company since 2019. Competitor Apple has been the leader in intelligent watches since entering the market in 2015.
- The group also has something new in its luggage three smart phones: the Pixel 6a as well as the 7 and 7 Pro versions. While the release date for the latter two is set for autumn, but the price is still unclear, there are more details for the Pixel 6a: the cheap offshoot of the already released Pixel 6 comes with a similar design language, a 6.1-inch -Screen and 5G – packed in a case made of recycled aluminum. At 430 euros, the price is based on mid-range cell phones.
- With the Pixel Buds Pro, Google introduced new ones to match the smartphones In-Ear Headphones in front. The devices offer active noise cancellation and a mode for 3D audio. The Pixel Buds Pro analyze the head movements of the wearer and adjust the sound accordingly – if the paired smartphone meets the requirements. The headphones will be launched on July 21, 2022 in the colors red, beige, light blue and black. The price is 219 euros.
- Google caused a sensation among experts with a new one smart glasses. This shows the wearer translations of spoken texts practically in real time in their field of vision. This should help, for example, when people talk to each other in different languages. Deaf people should also benefit from this. However, Google left technical details about the glasses open.
- Also at the software there are some innovations at the Internet company: Instead of offering major new functions, Google wants to make the operating system more personal for users, for example with consideration for privacy. Users can also customize the appearance of the interface with different colors and set up different system languages for apps. In addition, the Android smartphone should become a replacement for the wallet. Credit cards, flight tickets and admission tickets can be stored in the Google Wallet. And the Nest Hub Max, Google’s smart display for smart home applications, recognizes users just by looking at the device. (Rome)
