US First Lady Jill Biden apologized Tuesday after saying Latinos are “as unique” as tacos for breakfast in San Antonio, speaking at the country’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization.
“[Jill Biden] apologizes for conveying anything other than pure admiration and love for the Hispanic community.”
The first lady flew to San Antonio on Monday to speak at the annual conference of UnidosUS, the Latin American civil rights and advocacy group formerly known as the Conselho Nacional de La Rasa.
Before returning to Washington, Jill Biden also spoke during a fundraiser for the Democratic Party.
An attempt at praise fell short when the first lady said that the Hispanic variety was “as distinctive as bodegas in the Bronx, as beautiful as flowers in Miami, and as unique as breakfast tacos in San Antonio.”
Jill Biden also mispronounced “wine cellars,” small shops in urban areas usually specializing in Latin American products.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and other organizations responded via social media to the “wrongdoing”.
“The use of tacos for breakfast to showcase the uniqueness of San Antonio’s Hispanics is indicative of a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Hispanics in the region,” the journalists’ organization noted.
The association also said that the first lady and speechwriters should “dedicate more time in the future to better understand the complexities of people and society.” [latina]”.
Hispanic voters tend to favor Democrats, although the group’s support patterns vary greatly in different parts of the US.
Hispanic support for the Democratic presidential candidate has declined in 2020 (Joe Biden) compared to 2016 (Hillary Clinton), according to the Pew Research Center.
Some Democrats have suggested that the party is not working hard enough to retain Hispanic support.
During her speech, Jill Biden discussed how President Joe Biden has responded to the community, including appointing Hispanics to cabinet and other high government positions and helping them vaccinate against Covid-19.
In June, Republican Myra Flores won a special congressional election in the usually Democratic area of South Texas.
Flores is a Trump supporter and the first Mexican woman to be elected to the US Congress.
On Tuesday, Jill Biden spent part of the day with Mexican First Lady Beatriz Gutiérrez Mueller, while Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador was at the White House with his American counterpart.
