The Dachstein is Austria’s Instagram king

The Dachstein is Austria’s Instagram king

Steep south faces, several glaciers, wide karst areas, rugged rock formations, gentle alpine meadows and mountain lakes in the area: The Dachstein is not only one of the most diverse mountain ranges in the Eastern Alps, but also by far the most popular alpine photo motif in Austria on Instagram. In the previous year, 217,000 contributions were dedicated to the mountain massif, which lies partly in Upper Austria and partly in Styria. This was the result of an analysis by APA-Comm, for which more than 2,000 Austrian mountains and their presence on Instagram were evaluated.

Numerous tourist attractions

The reasons for this are obvious: the motif, located between Hallstatt and Schladming and popular with photo-savvy visitors, can be easily reached by gondola and offers Instagram-friendly tourist attractions.

Not only the second highest peak in the northern Eastern Alps at 2995 meters can be found in Instagram posts, but also photos of the ice cave, the suspension bridge, hiking impressions of the holiday-friendly adventure trails and pictures of the “Sky Walk” viewing platform. Known as the “Stairs to Nowhere,” the attraction seems to attract snapshots like a magnet. It leads in 14 narrow steps to a glass platform at a dizzying height. Whoever climbs the stairs stands directly in the wall, 400 meters above the base of the wall.

Traunstein in the top 10

Another Upper Austrian is one of the ten most popular Instagram mountains in the country: last year, 44,581 postings were posted by the guardian on Lake Traunsee under the hashtag #Traunstein, and all without artificially created viewing platforms for vacationers.

The Arlberg once again took second place in the ranking. The winter sports Eldorado between Tyrol and Vorarlberg combines a total of more than 150,000 entries. Above all, guests from the internationally renowned tourist resorts of Lech, Zürs and St. Anton am Arlberg ensure a high presence.

With the Großglockner (141,845 entries) and the Kitzsteinhorn (127,466 entries), the two 3,000 m peaks take third and fourth place among the top 10 mountains in Austria. The Großglockner is not only the highest mountain in the country, but also has the highest paved pass road in Austria with the Großglockner High Alpine Road. It offers a variety of impressions, especially for motorized photographers.

In the course of the hashtag analysis for the Kitzsteinhorn, images with a view of Zell am See and the Hohe Tauern as well as the impressive power plants of Kaprun dominate. As in 2019, the Hochkönig in Salzburg took fifth place with 79,129 entries.
