Sinja Kraus ultimately had no chance against Jelena Ostapenko in the third individual at the Billie Jean King Cup in Schwechat on Saturday. The only 20-year-old Viennese lost to the 18th in the world rankings, who had only won against Tamira Paszek the day before after defending two match balls, despite winning the set clearly with 0: 6, 6: 3, 1: 6.
Paszek then had his back to the wall against Diana Marcinkevica, who was nominated in place of Daniela Vismane at short notice. Austria now had to win both that final singles and the final doubles to still make it through promotion.
The winner advances to the 2023 qualifying round, with the draw taking place in Glasgow on Sunday (2pm). The loser will play in Europe-Africa Group I next year.
