With a win on the 15th matchday in the Bundesliga, the players of VCA Amstetten welcomed their new coach Harry Brokking. After five hard-fought sets, they were the first team to defeat the hitherto undefeated table leader Hypo Tirol 3-2. “I congratulate my team and the new coach. He has set the team up perfectly,” said VCA sports director Michael Henschke after the home win.
On Tuesday in the 3-1 win in Hartberg, the sports director was still on the coaching bench at the VCA before Brokking from the Netherlands took over the helm. “We now had to wait a long time before we were able to achieve our best performance with the team. Now we’ve managed to do that two games in a row,” said Henschke, whose team recently beat second-placed Hartberg and now leaders Tirol. In the meantime, the Lower Austrians have moved up to second place in the league. The table leader from Tyrol, who was unbeaten before the match, started strong, took the lead early and already had a 7:14 lead in the first set. But the hosts didn’t give up, fought back and equalized at 17:17. In the final of the first round they gained three set points and used the second to make it 25:22. It was clear: something is going to work today.
As a result, it went back and forth. An all-important fifth set awaited the spectators in the Pölz-Halle. The fans whipped the hosts to a 15:13 after more than two hours. “Despite the two recent wins, we have to be modest. There are still three difficult games to go before the end of the regular season,” Henschke summed it up.
