HLW Freistadt relies on invigorating herbal tea instead of high-sugared canned drinks. Responsible for this is the tea bar, which was initiated by the third year of the school. After the schoolgirls had already dealt with the topic of tea and the effects of various herbs in class in the autumn, the young people realized: A cup of freshly brewed tea made from regional herbs and herbs they collected themselves sweetens many a cold winter day. This gave rise to the idea of setting up a tea bar in the “Schüler Chill Out Lounge”. Since then, all students, teachers and guests have been able to prepare fresh tea here during the breaks. The entire school community helps to ensure that the tea bar is available to everyone free of charge: for example with home-dried herbs and honey from our own beekeeping.

In addition to the health benefits of the herbal tea, the cozy lounge also promotes exchange between the students. School and private experiences are discussed here, learning tips are exchanged or simply a few minutes away from the lesson. To ensure that there is always order, the students look after the tea bar independently on a weekly basis with the support of their teachers. First and foremost, director Jürgen Ehling proves to be a fan of the tea bar: “The tea bar is a great asset in many respects. Tea is a healthy drink, the cozy atmosphere around the bar supports a pleasant school climate, and by harvesting herbs, the students connect to a long tradition of the orders.”

School focus on health-fitness-nutrition

Two new fields of study underline the importance of the topics of health and nutrition – they are an elementary part of the teaching at the private religious school in Freistadt. On the one hand, there has recently been training to become a teacher for nutrition at the University of Education in Linz, and on the other hand, since October it has been possible to study “Nutrition-Exercise-Health” at the University of Salzburg. The graduates of the HLW-Freistadt are highly qualified for both fields of study, says Director Ehling: “Orders have always geared their educational offerings to the needs of society. We are continuing this tradition and are also offering a future-oriented offer with our new educational focus on health, fitness and communication.”
