UMP must use 200 trucks per day due to the delay in the Central Railroad

The Finnish company had a temporary road transport system in view of the new postponement of the inauguration of the railway works.

The delays in the construction of the central railway they forced the Finnish company UPM to implement a “temporary” road transport system to move the pulp and chemical products involved in production at the mill Pass of the Bulls, which will start operating during the second half of March.

The comings and goings around the construction of the Central Railway —whose date was again postponed and its inauguration is no longer expected in May, but only in October or November of this year— meant that UPM had to set up an alternative road transport system to unite its new plant in Paso de los Toros with the Port of Montevideo.

In this way, the cellulose pulp, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid and fuel oil, necessary inputs for the company’s production and which are already circulating and are currently used in the national industry, will be transported through route 5. : 200 trucks with semi-trailers with a capacity of 30 tons will be used to transport pulp on a daily basis, while another 25 trucks will carry chemical inputs.

“The service levels of the routes and intersections will maintain good circulation conditions and will not be modified by the presence of the trucks linked to the temporary road transport operation, according to the environmental study carried out by the consultancy CSI Ingenieros,” explained the company through a statement.

Delays on the Central Railway

The last postponement of the inauguration of the Central Railway, which was to begin operating on May 25, occurred in mid-January, when the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) and the company SACEEM reported that the reported deadlines would not be met.

According to the portfolio holder, Jose Luis Faleroan important element in the postponement of the completion of the works were the changes in the final location of the UPM2 plant, which forced ADDITIONAL wORKS.

“We have all had some difficulty. It will not bring inconveniences in four to the commitments made between all parties. We are going to have an overload of trucks, so we are working to be able to regulate it”, said the official on that occasion, when the possibility of UPM using the alternative means of transport for its industrial needs was already being considered.
