Since 2012, the European Parliament has decided that March 24th has been “Artisan Ice Cream Day”. Since 2013, this has been celebrated in ice cream parlors across Europe.
For this year, Austria was allowed to take over the creation of this special variety.

Traditional dessert to lick

“Austria is world-renowned for its excellent sweet specialties. We therefore wanted to focus on a typical Austrian pastry and decided to create the ‘apple strudel’ ice cream variety,” said Andrew Nussbaumer, spokesman for the Austrian ice cream parlor operators in the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ), and Luca Alberti, spokesman for the Italian ice cream parlor operators in Austria.

The venue for the presentation was the long-established gelateria of the Leonardelli family in Klosterneuburg, which also runs two salons in Vienna. For the European – and at the same time Austrian – “Ice Cream of the Year”, an “Ice Cream Week 2023” with a focus on “Apple Strudel Ice Cream” will take place in the local salons from March 24th to 31st and from May 1st to 7th. From June 26th to July 9th there are the “Children’s Ice Cream Weeks” with varieties such as unicorn, popcorn and smurf.

Last year, by the way, chocolate banana made the “race” in this country. The European Ice Cream 2022 was awarded “Dolce Sinfonia” (Sweet Symphony): a combination of chocolate and hazelnut.
