The Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pouaddressed this Wednesday the need for a clear international justice system and -locally-, mediations that allow expediting judicial processes, during his virtual intervention in the second Democracy Summit, organized by the United States.

“That citizens can resolve their conflicts through a person who generates those mediation processes and thus the judiciary is not overloaded with cases that cannot be dealt with in a timely manner,” said the Uruguayan president, quoted by the Sputnik news agency.

“He international justice system It has to be clear, it has to have the same outlook, it has to have the ability to ignore who is being judged and then it has to be forceful and comply when sanctions are applied,” the president stressed during his speech, in which he added that International Law lacks coercive power.

To the summit, organized for the first time in December 2021 at the initiative of the U.S. government121 international leaders were invited to participate, including the Argentine president Alberto Fernandezwho will contribute their vision on the challenges of democracy and the guarantees of justice.

Commenting on the challenges for global democracy, the Uruguayan president vindicated both electoral justice and election processes, as well as a system in which the powers are independent in their actions, but can control each other.

“For the judicial system to work it has to have a chance of extended access to justicejustice for all, within reach, and that means not only being tried according to the law, but the previous steps, access to defense and a very clear accusatory process, which ends in a trial as quickly as possible”, stressed.

defended the call “justice in the neighborhoods”through the figure of a mediator capable of resolving conflicts at a lower level, without the need to raise them and thus overload the judicial system and, therefore, delay resolutions.
