TikTok, one of the most used social networks in the world, was involved in a new controversy. In this case, Mountainone of the largest jurisdictions in USAbecame the first state to completely prohibit the use of the social network of videos.

According to a statement, lawmakers and officials are concerned that the app could be used to Chinese regime access information of the citizen. The measure is expected to be legally challenged, and serve as an example for other states.

The city had already banned the app on devices government owned at the end of December, since the governor, Greg Gianforte, said TikTok posed a “significant risk” to sensitive state data. More than half of the US states and the federal government have a similar ban.

How the new law that prohibits TikTok is applied

Montana’s new law prohibit downloads of TikTok in the state and will fine any entity with US$10,000 per day for each time you offer the possibility to access the social media platform or download the application. The sanctions will apply only to the platforms, not to the users.

Opponents of the law’s enforcement argue that it is government overreach, explaining that Montana residents could circumvent the ban by using a virtual private network.

From the social network, they affirmed that they have a plan to protect users and vowed to fight the measure. Another group that came out against it were small business owners, who said they use the app for advertising that helps grow their businesses and reach more customers.
